The international aspects of ship technology, maritime operations and management are anchored in the international nature of the maritime industry. That is why the program itself has an international dimension.

Maritime operations covered in the program include technical and managerial aspects through operations related to ships, installations and subsea / offshore vessels, as well as operations above and below the waterline and along the coastline.

The Maritime Operations program combines the nautical domain with its focus on operational and organisational aspects with the engineering domain, which focuses on the technical aspects, as well as managerial aspects related to the operational perspective. The purpose of such a combination is to cover maritime operations in depth and enable students to contribute to improve and to develop such operations – e.g. related to safety and efficiency.

Graduates with their complete and updated knowledge will be a valued asset for the maritime industry both off- and onshore.

 EXAMPLES OF JOBS & TASKS:

  • Consultancy work based on an understanding of operations and environmental systems plus economical and technical advisory capacity for maritime structures.
  • Project management in companies within the maritime sector.
  • Innovation and development tasks within the academic core competencies of the program: environmental system analysis, maritime technology and finance.

The study program sets out to cover maritime operations, with ship technology and management as supporting framework. Maritime operations will cover different aspects related to different maritime operations; the international aspect (such as regulations), the technical aspect (such as ship stability), the organizational aspect (such as the complex relationship between human and technical factors) and the managerial aspect (such as safety and risk) throughout the two compulsory semesters. In the maritime industry of today the technological, operational and managerial aspects are entwined and technology and management will both be present in some form in all maritime operations.

A holistic approach in regard to economy, environment and development increases the attractiveness of the graduates for the maritime labor market. For this reason the student may choose between several specialisations, offered by international partner universities. The specialisation refer to the core education areas the respective partners are known for.

The workload in a course is measured in credits. One year full-time is 60 credits. Most courses are 10 or 6 credits. In a full-time study, a minimum of 40 hours of productive work each week during the study is required. Some students may need to use more time.

Western Norway University of Applied Sciences (HVL) is responsible for the admission to this program. Please check the information page of HVL for information about admission requirements and deadlines.

You will find information about the required documents for application here.

A common selection committee will select the students from all the applicants. The selection committee will select the students on the basis of their relevant academic background – bachelor or equivalent. If two or more candidates are of similar ranking, then the statement of Purpose / Motivation Letter will be taken into consideration upon selecting the candidates.

The students are enrolled at both universities. For the examinations the local examination rules are applied.
