Riding a bike is not only good for your health, but also for the environment: Did you know that there are more than one billion cars on the road worldwide, emitting about five billion tons of CO2 into the environment every year? That's quite a lot. But the wheel was invented about 200 years ago for very different reasons: At that time, there was a famine, which is why many horses died. Karl Freiherr von Drais pondered how else people could get around and transport things. So the native of Karlsruhe invented the bicycle, which looked more like today's running wheels for small children, only in large. It weighed 22 kilograms and had no pedals. Fortunately, the design was further developed!
Good to know:
CO2 stands for the gas carbon dioxide and is part of the air we breathe in and out. In addition, CO2 is part of a protective layer of our earth and ensures mild temperatures that plants, animals and humans can comfortably withstand. Natural CO2 is therefore helpful, but the additional CO2 that is released into the environment by cars or coal-fired power plants, for example, is harmful to the climate.
A flat tire, a broken chain or a broken bike light? In the bicycle workshop, which is located in the basement in front of the E&I building, students can repair their bicycles together with helpers at low cost. The repair station right next to the Lüttje Studi-Huus can also be used around the clock to repair your bike yourself.
