Professorship

Professorship

The HAW professorship combines practical teaching with application-oriented research and offers attractive career prospects for academics with professional experience. It makes it possible to prepare students specifically for the demands of practice, to realize innovative research projects with partners from business and society and to actively develop one's own specialist area.

The recruitment requirements for a professorship are regulated in §25 of the Lower Saxony Higher Education Act (NHG).

  1. Completed university degree
  2. Aptitude for academic work (usually demonstrated by a doctorate or academic or artistic achievements commensurate with a doctorate)
  3. At least five years of professional experience after graduation, of which at least three years outside a university in a field that corresponds to the subject area of the application
  4. Pedagogical aptitude (usually proven by teaching experience)

Professors have a lot of freedom in their work. The following areas comprise your working life - always with a focus on practice:

  1. Practice-oriented teaching: teaching 18 hours per week per semester, designing courses and examinations, supervising Bachelor's and Master's theses
  2. Application-oriented research: research projects with companies from the region, opportunities for (international) research semesters (ERASMUS). At the Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences, we have three main research areas: Industrial Informatics, Sustainable Technologies and ROSIG (Resource Orientation between Individual and Society)
  3. Academic self-administration: committees and/or offices in the departments (department management) or university management (Senate), active participation in shaping the university, promotion of young talent

The appointment procedure is the formal selection process for filling a professorship. The procedure includes the following steps:

Step 1: Job description and advertisement

Vacant professorships to be filled are publicly advertised by the Presidential Board of the university at the request of the department with a four-week application period. The advertisement contains the position, the area of responsibility, the required recruitment conditions and the date of appointment. The advertisement must be approved by the Ministry before publication.

Step 2: Formation and composition of the appointment committee

The department forms an appointment committee with all status groups for each professorship to be filled. In order to ensure the quality of the appointment procedure, attention is paid to gender parity in the composition of the committee. Professors from other colleges and universities are also consulted to ensure sufficient specialist expertise.

Step 3: Selection procedure

The appointment committee makes a pre-selection from the applications received, taking into account the position-specific criteria and the general requirements for a professorship. On this basis, the appointment committee decides which applicants will be invited to a personal interview with a trial teaching event. After the personal interviews and trial teaching sessions, the appointment committee decides which applicants are qualified for inclusion in the appointment proposal.

Step 4: Appointment proposal

The appointment committee decides on the appointment proposal on the basis of the application documents, any expert opinions requested and the results of the personal interviews with the individual applicants. The appointment report is divided into a progress report on the appointment procedure and a justification of the appointment proposal, which ideally consists of a list of three names. Once the appointment proposal has been completed, it is approved by the Faculty Council, the Senate and the university management. The appointment proposal is then forwarded in its entirety to the Lower Saxony Ministry of Science and Culture together with all the necessary documents.

Step 5: Appointment and acceptance of appointment

The professors are appointed by the Ministry of Science and Culture of Lower Saxony. The president and applicant then conduct appointment negotiations in which the general conditions for the professorship are discussed. After successful appointment negotiations, the final appointment is accepted.
