Design – From Concept to Product

You're creative and full of ideas

Do you want to have an impact on real products?

You enjoy working in an interdisciplinary setting

Then the Mechanical Engineering and Design—Construction program is just right for you.

Would you like to play an active role in developing new products and influence how they’re designed? Do you want to incorporate your ideas and design assemblies using the latest materials and innovative machine components? And do you also enjoy collaborating with other disciplines to incorporate customer requirements, quality standards, and guidelines into your designs? Then, in the Design specialization, you’ll learn how innovative products are developed and analyzed, how creative methods are applied in this process, and how the latest technologies—such as laser material processing or additive manufacturing—are used to manufacture these products. Once you’ve completed the program with a specialization in Design Engineering, you can work in industry—for example, in product development, testing, or engineering calculations. In all these areas, you’ll have a direct impact on the final product.

  • Anwendung kreativer Methoden
  • Verwendung von High-Tech-Werkstoffen
  • Benutzung modernster Berechnungs-Systeme
  • Gestaltung zukunftsfähiger Produkte

Schwerpunkt Konstruktion - unsere Labore

Dynamics of Complex Machines

Machines are always in motion! Some movements are desired, such as the rotation of gear components, while others—such as rattling or squeaking—are undesirable.

When developing and optimizing machines, we analyze the dynamics of all components, for example, using state-of-the-art measurement technology. This is how we ensure smooth operation. To this end, the Machine Dynamics Laboratory is equipped with advanced vibration analysis techniques, such as laser-scanning vibrometers.

Simulation/FEM and Optimization

The development of new components must become faster and more cost-effective. To avoid expensive testing, we use modern simulation techniques.

This allows us to understand a component’s behavior even before we hold it in our hands for the first time. It is also possible to optimize existing geometries using computer algorithms.

Software packages such as Abaqus, Optistruct, and Tosca are available for this purpose.

Lightweight Construction and Innovative Materials

The development of new machines, products, and applications is not possible without a fundamental understanding of materials. Today’s requirements focus, among other things, on maximizing the utilization of materials while taking safety and efficiency into account. Students work on selecting the right materials and optimizing designs in lightweight construction to develop products that are optimized for cost and energy efficiency.

Industrial Laser Material Processing

Laser material processing is a specialized manufacturing technology used in the fields of welding, cutting, and surface treatment. This process involves non-contact operation at high energy densities and takes advantage of the low-heat nature of laser processing to achieve efficient manufacturing. The interaction between the material and the laser’s various wavelengths is crucial to the process and is explored in lectures as well as through laboratory work.
