Your benefits of studying “Sustainable product development in mechanical engineering”

Practice-oriented
Solve questions in a practical way: Use proven industry methods and software solutions – ideal for your optional work as a student trainee.
Your course of study. The module overview
Start your journey into sustainable product development in mechanical engineering! In 7 semesters full of exciting projects, you will achieve 210 ECTS and lay the foundation for your success.
You will start with the fundamentals of sustainability and technical basics, followed by different focus areas, which are set anew each semester.
In the 5th semester, you can decide whether you want to deepen your theoretical focus at a partner university or gain practical experience at an innovative company abroad.
Finally, you will develop an application-oriented Bachelor's thesis in close collaboration with companies and fellow students. Discover the possibilities and download the module overview now!
Your future skills
On the Sustainable Product Development in Mechanical Engineering degree program, you will acquire the skills to successfully develop and market physical, digital or service products. You will integrate technical, business, social and environmental perspectives – across the entire product life cycle.
The “Knowledge and Understanding” area of expertise initially comprises a broad basis of fundamental technological and methodological skills from the fields of mathematics and engineering. By dealing with relevant areas of mathematics, mechanics, materials science, design, data processing, etc., the necessary foundations for the development of technical products are laid and the possibility of a subsequent Master’s degree in mechanical engineering or related subjects is ensured. In addition, basic knowledge and methodological skills in the areas of sustainability (economic, ecological and social aspects) as well as business processes and project management are to be acquired.
“Application and generation of knowledge”is the basic idea of this degree program. This includes the ability to collect and analyze a wide range of information in order to plan product development and introduction and to evaluate technical systems. In addition, knowledge and methods should be successfully applied to develop creative solutions for technical products and efficient implementation concepts.
“Communication and cooperation” is a key qualification for specialists, managers and founders. By reflecting on the different interests in product development and realization processes and by directly “experiencing” how goals can be achieved through relevant communication and active cooperation, the importance of communication and cooperation should be recognized and corresponding personal skills improved.
The following objectives in particular are pursued in the competence area “Scientific self-image / professionalism”. Firstly, an awareness should be developed of the need to understand society’s demands on scientific professions. The topic of sustainability plays an important role here, as formulated, for example, in the UN’s 17 sustainability goals. This awareness serves as a basis for reflecting on one's own professional actions. In addition, potential conflicts of interest, e.g. between the various requirements of a product or during the development and manufacturing process, should be recognized and strategies for dealing with them professionally developed.
International focus semester: study or internship – choose for yourself!
Ready for a global adventure in your 5th semester? Discover the world during your Sustainable Product Development in Mechanical Engineering degree course with a semester or internship abroad. Immerse yourself in new cultures, expand your specialist knowledge and make international contacts for your future: be inspired and shape your career worldwide!
Your career opportunities in product development, mechanical engineering and sustainability
Become a product manager in mechanical engineering! As the central interface between the market, technology and strategy, you will analyze customer needs and define forward-looking product visions. You will manage the entire life cycle of machines and systems and use your sustainability expertise to integrate ecological and social aspects into the product strategy. Your goal: to create innovative, sustainable products that are economically successful and environmentally friendly.
