For the qualification of first officer, the applicant has to complete and prove seafaring service of at least 12 months as a nautical watch officer. To earn your certificate for the qualification of captain, the applicant has to prove and complete additional seafaring service of at least 12 months.
The technical training course places a lot of value on practice-oriented teaching on a technical school standard in a class environment. That’s why more technical school teachers sail regularly with various shipping companies. This is confirmed annually by the Quality Management system.
We also offer further education opportunities, as ROC/GOC (February/September, on request)!
After passing the final examination, the graduate receives the qualification of officer in charge of a navigational watch (NWO) and the education qualifications of the advanced technical college certificate and state certified technician. This is a Level 6 qualification according to the DQR (German Qualifications Framework for Lifelong Learning). With the NWO certificate, you can perform the duties of an officer in charge of a navigational watch on cargo and passenger ships of all sizes in all operating areas. Together with the advanced technical college certificate, this also qualifies you to attend university (of applied sciences) and to shorten the “Nautical Science” degree programme to 4 semesters.
For the qualification of first officer (NEO), the officer in charge of a navigational watch must provide evidence of at least 12 months of active time at sea. To obtain certification of qualification as a captain, the graduate must provide evidence of a further minimum of 12 months as a first officer or of a further 24 months as an officer in charge of a navigational watch in addition to the active time at sea specified above.

After successfully passing the examination for entry into the profession of officer in charge of a navigational watch (NWO), the (maritime) world is the graduate’s oyster. You can thus “sign on” to ships as a navigational ship’s officer. After 2 years (net) of active time at sea, the Master’s Certificate can then be issued.
In addition to the option of operating ships as the captain, there are often then good career opportunities in the maritime industry and commerce, in shipping company operations, in the Federal Waterways and Shipping Administration, as a marine pilot, in international organisations or in logistics companies and other companies closely associated with shipping.
Officers in charge of a navigational watch, first officers and captains perform the following duties:
- Navigation and manoeuvring of a ship, operation and monitoring of the technical equipment on the bridge, organisation of bridge duty and watches
- Maritime surveillance and operation of the ship
- Realisation and monitoring of maritime radio communication
- Planning, implementation and supervision of the jobs arising in the nautical sector in ship operation
- Assessment of processes in machine operation
- Monitoring of the ship’s seaworthiness and fitness for loading
- Monitoring of the completeness, functionality and readiness for use of the ship’s firefighting, rescue and other safety equipment
- Realisation and supervision of management tasks
- Recognition of the duty of care and healthcare for the crew and passengers
- People management in ship operation, planning and implementation of work assignment and training on board
- Maintenance of the ship, its equipment and fittings
- Performance of the duties required by law and other regulations
Anyone who has obtained the additional qualification of marine engineer must also carry out:
- Management and oversight of the machinery
- Planning, implementation and supervision of maintenance work
- Performance of the duties required by law and other regulations
