Postdoc

Postdoc phase

The post-doc phase is the time after the doctorate and serves as orientation and qualification for the further academic career path, such as the step towards a professorship. It offers the opportunity to deepen one's own research focus, develop new skills and distinguish oneself for responsible positions in science and teaching.

The time after the doctorate serves as orientation and qualification for the further (academic) career path, such as a professorship. Further research experience is gained, further publications are published, thus sharpening the academic profile and further expanding the (research) network.

In your postdoc phase, you have various opportunities for further development:

  • If you would like to continue to focus on research and teaching, you can consider employment as a research assistant at the university. Please note the twelve-year regulation of the Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (WissZeitVG § 2 paragraph 1) - six years during the doctorate and six years after the doctorate. The background to the law is to create a certain rotation in the academic working world. Detailed information can be found on the BMBF website. With regard to the advantages and disadvantages of fixed-term (part-time) positions in the public academic service, please refer to the #ichbinHanna initiative.
  • Another option for remaining active in science is to work in renowned research institutes such as the Fraunhofer, Helmholtz, Max Plack or Leibniz Institutes.
  • In addition, the private sector also offers numerous opportunities to apply your knowledge from your studies and research in industry. This step can be particularly advantageous with a view to a future professorship at a HAW, as in Lower Saxony at least three years of professional practice outside the university sector must be proven for an appointment (§25 NHG).

For a further academic career as a HAW professor, it is advantageous to gain further teaching experience as part of your work at the university in order to be able to prove your "pedagogical-didactic aptitude" in accordance with §25 NHG. CampusDidaktik at the Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences offers you a comprehensive range of further training courses as well as various events and services in the field of teaching.

You can also take part in the university's qualification program for young academics. The aim here is to actively advise and support you and prepare you for the interdisciplinary requirements of an HAW professorship.

You will find further support offers specifically for women in the program for top academic staff of the Equal Opportunities Office.

You can also find further training and development opportunities on the Human Resources page.

Research opportunities

Three key research areas, which are listed on the research map of the German Rectors' Conference, shape the profile of research at the university: Industrial Informatics, Sustainable Technologies and Processes and Resource Orientation at the Intersection of Individual and Society (ROSIG). The diversity of research is rounded off by projects and activities in various sub-areas.

Current research projects at the university can be found here.

Further information on research and research projects can be found on the respective pages of the main research areas and the individual research pages of the departments.

The university's Knowledge and Technology Transfer Office also offers advice on research funding.
