(International Coordinator of the Department of Social Work and Health)

We always offer the study semester exchange programme "Supporting families, children and youths in their environment" in the spring term (= summer semester).

In 2026, we offer 11 courses in English, from which you can put together your individual study programme.
Ten courses are in the field of Social Work and Health (max. 30 ECTS) and one course is a German course (5 ECTS).
In order to participate in our English-language course programme, you must have at least a B2 level of English.
(Please find out in advance about the requirements for credit transfer at your home university and discuss your choice with your International Coordinator)

You are also welcome to complete an internship in a social institution in the region.

We offer a variable 15-16 ECTS programme for international students studying social work or similar subjects. In addition to practical training in an institution, this includes an accompanying course in the Department of Social Work and completion of a German language course at the university. This combination not only gives you an insight into the practice of social work, but also into the social work system in Germany. Furthermore, you can develop or deepen your German language skills in order to better connect with people in your professional and private environment in Emden (and the surrounding region).
Important: As we contact institutions in the region according to your interests and this is an individual arrangement, the choice of internship programme is only possible in timely consultation with the International Coordinator.

If you are interested, please contact me at: catherine.herbin|at|hs-emden-leer.de

We look forward to seeing you!

Of course, you can also add courses from the regular German-language courses offered by the Department of Social Work and Health to your study programme. However, this is only possible if you fulfill the respective requirements (e.g. German language skills at level B2).

It is also possible to take courses from other departments in English (see course catalog).

In both cases, however, your choice of course must be discussed individually with me and your international coordinator at your home university and approved by both of us.

In the Fact Sheet 2025/26 you will find, among other things, information on

  • the contact persons in the department and in the International Office
  • the language requirements in the departments
  • the semester times and fees at our university
  • as well as other data you will need to provide as part of the application process

You will find a lot of helpful information about your stay abroad in Emden, including preparation for your stay (visa, health insurance, etc.) as well as about accommodation and living in Emden on the pages of our International Office.

If you have any further questions, please contact our International Coordinator in the Department of Social Work and Health:
