Laboratory for machine elements

Welcome to the website of the Laboratory for Machine Elements. Prof. Dr.-Ing. Kathrin Ottink is responsible for the subject area of machine elements at the Emden-Leer University of Applied Sciences and Dr.-Ing. Thomas Ebel is responsible for the practical operation. You will find their contact details below.

Machine elements - high-tech products in almost every technical system

Machine elements are often not the most expensive components in a system - but their failure can result in enormous costs, downtime and other problems.

Just think of a seal on a marine gearbox that fails and causes the entire gearbox to be flooded with seawater. Such a seal itself only costs a few euros, whereas the subsequent costs for repairing the entire gearbox can amount to several thousand euros. The reason for the failure may have been the use of a seal made of an unsuitable material or failure to replace the seal regularly as part of maintenance. Examples like this show that it is very important that the right machine elements, such as bearings, seals, gears or screws, are selected or designed specifically for the respective application. Furthermore, machine elements must be specifically tested and further developed before they are used, especially for use in safety applications. Furthermore, cases of damage from a wide range of industries can be examined in detail using failed machine elements. This often allows the cause of damage to be determined retrospectively.

The Laboratory for Machine Elements at Emden-Leer University of Applied Sciences focuses on all of these areas.

Typical machine elements are
  • Rolling and plain bearings
  • Static and dynamic seals
  • Screws and other fastening elements
  • Gear wheels
  • Gear shafts
  • Couplings

Students can already help to set up the laboratory. As part of technical projects and final theses, test stand set-ups and laboratory equipment for the investigation of machine elements are already being developed. If you would like to assist in the areas of design, regulation/control of test equipment or assembly/construction, please contact Prof. Ottink or Dr. Ebel about possible projects and tasks.
