Laboratory for Materials Science, Laser and Joining Technology

Hello and welcome to the website of the Laboratory for Materials Science, Laser and Joining Technology

The combination of these fields offers an ideal opportunity not only to perform the processes but also to quickly evaluate the results. “What is the strength of the weld?” or “How does the material harden after processing?” are just a few of the questions that must be answered to produce high-quality products.
Explore the interdisciplinary topics on this website. For more information, please contact the laboratory directors, Prof. Dr.-Ing. Esther Held and Prof. Dr.-Ing. Thomas Schüning, as well as research associates B. Eng. Hermann Merkel and M. Eng. Marcel Stamm.

Areas of Application for the Laboratory

Laser beams offer a unique combination of high intensity, a consistent spectrum, and sharp focusing into a well-defined beam. This makes it possible to deliver energy to materials with a high degree of precision, which is a prerequisite for further processing using various application methods.

The wide variety of lasers available makes it possible to utilize these specific properties in a diverse range of applications.
