In the "Wind Challenge" project, our students work interdisciplinarily on the development, construction and testing of a small wind turbine for the International Small Wind Turbine Contest (ISWTC). The International Small Wind Turbine Contest is a an annual contest organized by the Hanze University of Applied Sciences (Hanze UAS), in which student teams from different countries compete in designing and building the best performing Small Wind Turbine (SWT). Our team is called Wind of Change and participated for the first time in the contest in the year 2019.
Whether you're just starting your studies or are about to graduate, whether as an intern, a student trainee or for a technical project, your final thesis or even only for sharing experiences. Students from all study fields are welcome to join us and take a role.
We are looking for motivated members for working in the following fields:

The design phase is a very creative stage of the whole process, in which our students bring their own ideas and propose technical solutions for achieving our goals. The main fields of our design tasks are:
- Aerodynamic and structural design of blades
- CAD modelling of mechanical components and assemblies
- Design of electrical and electronic boards
- Design of control systems, e.g., pitch control
We simulate the whole wind turbine as well as its sub-systems in order to achieve an efficient design before production.
The most important types of simulations performed in our group are:
- Blade Element Momentum (BEM) simulations for analysing the aerodynamic and structural behaviour of the turbine
- Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to study the behaviour of blades and different components such as winglets and trailing edge flaps under different flow conditions
- Finite Element Modelling (FEM) to simulate different parts and assemblies for stress/strength, modal, and fatigue analyses
- Simulation of electrical and electronic boards
- Combined simulations to study the interactions between different fields. For example, combining CFD and FEM to study the Fluid-Structure interactions (FSI)
In this stage, we manufacture and build all the components of the wind turbine together.
After a subsystem is ready, we test its functionality individually and in relation with other subsystem.
Some examples of our activities are:
- Manufacturing and assembling of mechanical parts
- Production of electrical boards
- Preparation test stands and experimental configuration for subsystems
- Connecting different sensors and systems to the main controller
- Programming and testing the controller/s
- Post-processing of the acquired data
- 3D printing
- ... and a lot of fun!
Every project needs to be managed, tracked and controlled to make sure that the team achieves the defined goals. Some of the activities regarding this field are:
- Project planning and monitoring including time tracking, resource and expenses.
- Media management including the maintenance and organization of the social accounts of the team such as the website and Facebook/Instagram pages, as well as the preparation of other materials such as images, reports, and videos.
