No matter how convinced we may be of the quality of the study conditions in the Mechanical Engineering and Design course, much more important are the opinions that our students have about us and what we offer. Read them for yourself!

The University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer not only offered me a great course of study, but also an unforgettable time! From the very first day, you are accompanied step by step through your studies. There are information events that either concern the study itself or about possibilities to get involved and further education outside the curriculum. I myself, for example, was active in the student council for mechanical engineering for many semesters, which gave me a say in university politics as a student. I was available as a contact person for other students and of course we organized parties and other events for fun and variety next to the university.

I also felt comfortable in the study itself. As a woman, you should not be put off by studying in a male domain. Here you are treated equally and are challenged and encouraged like any other fellow student. But in my opinion the biggest advantage is the small number of students. In the lectures there is a more school-like atmosphere, where you have the chance to ask questions at any time, and the professors can therefore deal with the problems of the students more individually. Additionally, there is also much better contact with the professors than in some other universities where one is only a matriculation number. This made it possible for me to spend my internship semester in England, write my bachelor’s thesis in Luxembourg, and travel to the partner university Hefei in China for two months together with four other students. And these experiences are worth more than any reading and an unforgettable experience!

After the basic studies (1-3 semesters) you choose a specialization. The university offers a total of 4 different ones (construction, design, production engineering, and plant engineering), in order to get back into your personal field of interest. I myself have chosen plant engineering. Here one goes deeper into the well-known "throwing out subjects", such as thermodynamics and fluid mechanics. In Emden you should not be afraid of this at all. On the contrary! The subject matter is explained in a student-friendly manner, with many exam-like example tasks and experiments for illustration in the well-equipped laboratories. In one exercise, for example, we unscrewed an old piston engine and reassembled it. Especially now that I am doing my master's at another university and have a comparison with the University of Applied Sciences in Emden, the advantages that the bachelor's degree course has given me in this field in particular become clear to me. If I had to choose again, I would always decide to study at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. And anyone looking for a course of study with a good education, numerous projects, a relaxed family atmosphere, and lots of fun is in the right place!

PS: Finally, the legendary Borkum weekend for the ‘Ersti's' should definitely be mentioned! It's a great opportunity to start your studies in a sociable way and get to know fellow students from other departments right from the start.

A practice-oriented course of study in which the fun of learning is in the foreground.

I did my bachelor's degree at a very small private university, and in comparison, HS Emden/Leer offers students a much wider range of options. Starting with the choice of electives, one can choose mathematical, production-related, subject-specific lectures or those in which experiments are carried out. Depending on how many lectures are actually offered, one can learn exactly the contents that one enjoys and also get a taste of completely different subject areas. The type of examination also varies depending on the lecture and professor. Homework, presentations or written examinations make the examination phase more varied and ensure that you don't have to write all the examinations in a short time at the end of the semester. For literature research, there are a large number of databases and publishers available free of charge. This was not the case with my bachelor's, which made the research very frustrating. 

The professors really try hard and are very relaxed with us, which makes the lectures very interesting and you don't just sit there and listen. I personally like this form of teaching, but you have to be aware that the professors know who you are after a short time and the lecture style is very much like it was in school. If you have problems or questions, the professors are always there to help you and also when you are looking for technical projects that need to be done during the master’s, every professor is happy to help you. 

During the master's you have to work on many projects, sometimes alone or often in group work. Everybody knows the problems associated with group work, so you should be aware of this when choosing this master's degree. If you prefer to work on your projects individually and like to write written exams only, you will have to get used to the way the master’ program works ;).

I am very satisfied with my choice to do the master’s at the HS Emden/ Leer and I would recommend the course to everybody. If you are looking for a practical and versatile master's degree, and you don't feel like sitting in crowded lecture halls, you should definitely apply in Emden! :).

In 2014 I started studying mechanical engineering and design in Emden. For four semesters now, I have been working in plant engineering, a very versatile combination of a total of four different fields of study.

Although the university is not the largest, you quickly find your way around and get to know your fellow students and professors early on. This way you can acclimatize better and arrive much more easily into student life!

Of course, in plant engineering it is not easy to calculate and to work with all kinds of formulas, but when the hurdle of the basic studies is passed, the methods learned are applied to interesting topics ,and you recognize the benefit which you might not have seen before.

In addition to lectures and project tasks, some modules, even in the basic studies, include laboratory experiments in which we can reproduce the theory on the plant or machine and gain practical insights that help to deepen the acquired knowledge. Phenomena such as cavitation in a centrifugal pump, the knocking of a gasoline engine, or hearing how loud a 2 KW gas turbine is, are all things you rarely get to see! Especially for students without vocational training, the laboratories offer a great opportunity to catch up on some of this.

The professors give us many opportunities to develop ourselves. For example, we have been on excursions to the Hannover Messe or Enercon. They also have many different suggestions for project tasks, which often cannot be carried out in this form in companies. Of course, they are also open to your own topics, so you can also realize your own ideas! So there is guaranteed to be something for everyone.

I am currently working on my bachelor's thesis at the University of Applied Sciences in the Laboratory for Power and Work Machines. There they are currently working on a 1-cylinder research engine. It's a remarkably versatile task: a control unit has already been completely programmed by myself, and in the future the engine is to be operated bi-valently with petrol and natural gas. Of course there is a lot of work involved, but this milestone is also feasible and with the right choice of topics it will remain interesting!

Highly recommended! (also for the girls — one feels in super good hands here).

Studying is easier than you thought it would be, especially if you have already completed an apprenticeship. The professors try hard to get you through the exams and you don't get the generally feared "weeding out". They give very precise indications of what is required in the exams and the whole learning atmosphere is like a school class. Homework is given, you work in small groups and work on projects and more difficult modules, such as technical mechanics. Students are divided into two groups, so that you have a better opportunity to ask questions in the lectures.

A disadvantage is of course that the profs will quickly remember your face and you will be addressed personally and, as in school, you will have to go to the blackboard to solve tasks (of course with the help of your fellow students and the profs.) But this is a great exercise for yourself.

The library is currently under reconstruction, when the new opening will take place is not yet known. Until then there will be a small sporadic library, but unfortunately without learning corners.

Apart from that, there are many small learning corners in the whole building, countless PCs with all kinds of programs you need, the laboratories are open at any time, and the semester fee is one of the cheapest.

I hope I haven't forgotten anything and that you will decide very soon to study here :).

My name is Malte Kahmann. I am 28 years old and successfully completed my studies in February 2018 in mechanical engineering (master’s) at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. I would like to give a brief insight into how I perceived my studies in Emden.

Since I had already completed my bachelor's degree in Emden (in Mechanical Engineering and Design), it was quickly clear to me that I would also like to do my master's degree in Emden. Although there were few references because the course was new, the familiar atmosphere and the proximity to practice at the HS Emden/Leer convinced me once again.

While the bachelor's programme is made up of an enormous number of individual modules that are rarely linked to each other, the master's programme contains many modules that are more about applying and combining the knowledge gained so far than about internalising as much material as possible in the shortest possible time. The possibilities for determining some of the study contents yourself through elective modules are very diverse and for the most part can be freely combined. This gives students the opportunity to vary the contents, in addition to the compulsory lectures, according to their strengths and interests. I also found it pleasant that the curriculum no longer contains any lectures that serve to weed out the student body.

All lectures I attended were designed in such a way that the students were very much involved, so it was not so much a matter of simply copying content, but of working it out together with the lecturer and fellow students. For this purpose, smaller projects were often integrated to deepen the learning content, as well as projects that were simultaneously evaluated as an examination performance. As a result, the workload is inevitably spread over the entire semester, which is why there is less pressure during the examination phase.

During the course of study, three projects comprising two 5CP projects and one 10CP project must be completed, whereby a 5CP project can be replaced by an additional elective module upon request to the examination office. This gives students the opportunity to deepen and combine individual topics and to establish a connection to practice.

An important positive aspect at the Emden location is the direct contact with the professors. During both the bachelor's and master's courses, all the professors and lecturers whose support I sought were very committed to providing the necessary assistance. This took the form of advice, loans of literature and laboratory equipment, as well as arranging appointments at short notice to discuss issues — at this point, thank you very much!

The equipment in the laboratories, especially the laboratory for power and working machines, is state-of-the-art and offers extensive possibilities for exciting project and final papers. Some of the pool rooms have already been modernized, while others are still awaiting this change – which is necessary. (> Editorial Note: The pool rooms were also recently modernized. )

Various student licenses, for example for PTC Creo and Matlab, can be obtained from the university, so that work on projects can also be done outside the pool rooms. Springer Link also offers the possibility of obtaining various literature online, which has been very helpful for me when I was working on my dissertations.

In summary, I can say that I can absolutely recommend Emden as a location for the study courses Mechanical Engineering (master’s) and Mechanical Engineering and Design (bachelor’s). The familiar atmosphere, the equipment of the university as well as the open-minded nature of the professors and lecturers are very helpful to successfully complete the course. I can unreservedly recommend the course of studies here and would choose to do so again.

Motivated professors, practical teaching content, and very good supervision are arguments for me to also do my master's in Production Engineering in Emden. Current industrial projects, seminars, and exercises in the very well-equipped laboratories offer, in addition to the lectures, realistic insights into the future professional fields of a production technology engineer.

The course of studies prepared me optimally for my career start in the automotive industry. I was particularly impressed by the excellently equipped Production Engineering Laboratory and the personal support provided by the professors, who are always helpful and very competent.

I can personally highly recommend the degree course Industrial and Business Systems (IBS) with a focus on production engineering with Prof. Dr.-Ing. Sven Carsten Lange at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer. The theoretical basics were explained to me in detail, through practical application examples.

The application-oriented lectures and exercises in particular help me daily in my current position as a research associate at the Fraunhofer Institute for Production Technology IPT. I manage the balancing act between research, industrial consulting, and a doctorate at the RWTH Aachen University, especially because the university in Emden/Leer created a real basis for me to start my career. I would therefore always choose the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer and the production engineering focus.

Through my training as a technical product designer, I was able to get a very good picture of design in mechanical engineering. This helped me to make the decision at an early stage as to which subject I would like to go into. Even today, I would not make a different decision, as I very much like the helpfulness of the professors, and the practical orientation in the laboratories.

After my bachelor's studies at the HS Emden/ Leer, there were several reasons for me to stay for a master's degree: the possibility to work on further extensive projects, specifically in the area of design and generative manufacturing processes, as well as the offer of in-depth courses in the area of design, under the supervision of highly competent professors and scientific staff. The practical relevance and encouragement to develop independently gives you a deep insight during your studies into the working methods of an engineer.
