In 1854 the Educational Institution Städtische Navigationsschule Leer (“National Navigation School Leer”) was founded. As a result of the re-establishment of the University of Ostfriesland in 1973, the independent navigation school Leer split into two different education establishments; the Faculty of Maritime Studies at the University of Ostfriesland and a separate technical navigation school.

At the turn of the last century, what belonged together finally got back together! The technical school and the faculty of the university became the “Institute of Seafaring Leer”. The re-establishment of the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer happened in 2009, followed a year later by the re-founding of the Faculty of Maritime Studies.
