The University of Emden/Leer is a member of the Working and Service Centre for International Student Applications (uni-assist) e. V., which carries out a preliminary review process for international student applications. For a fee, uni-assist determines whether all admission requirements for the desired degree programme have been met.

Further information on this procedure can be found on the website: www.uni-assist.de.

  • Applicants with foreign university entrance qualifications should apply online at uni-assist.
  • German citizens, foreign nationals with German university entrance qualifications and EU citizens should apply directly online at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer.
  • Applicants with German citizenship and foreign university entrance qualifications who are resident in North Rhine-Westphalia should contact the Certificate Recognition Office in Düsseldorf for recognition of their university entrance qualifications: (http://www.brd.nrw.de/schule/schulrecht_schulverwaltung/Zeugnisanerkennung.html) Bezirksregierung Düsseldorf, Zentrale Zeugnisanerkennungsstelle Postfach 300865, 40408 Düsseldorf. Once your university entrance qualification has been recognised by the Düsseldorf district government, you can apply online to the Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences.
  • Applications for the Master's programme in Maritime Operations: Applicants should apply directly online at Western Norway University of Applied Sciences.
  • Applications from exchange students within the framework of partnership programmes (Erasmus and others): Applicants should send their application directly to Emden/Leer University of Applied Sciences. Nationality is not a factor here. More information is available from the International Office.

You can find an overview of our degree programmes, including the respective admission requirements and application deadlines, here on our website: All degree programmes.

Special deadlines apply to some degree programmes (especially Master's programmes).

Early application is strongly recommended if you are applying from abroad and still need to take a language test before starting your studies. Applicants often need to allow several weeks for visa applications. The later applicants arrive at their place of study, the more difficult it becomes to find suitable accommodation.

If you will only obtain the necessary proof of your language skills after the application deadline but have already registered for the exam, please contact us directly.

To check whether you meet the admission requirements for studying at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer or whether you first need to attend a preparatory college or a German language course, please submit an online application to uni-assist (https://my.uni-assist.de/) and upload the following documents, if available:

  • School leaving certificate with a list of individual grades (in the original language and, if necessary, a certified translation into German or English)
  • Certificate of passing the university entrance examination (if required in your home country)
  • Certificate of previous studies (if available)
  • University certificates (university, colleges, academies) with a list of individual grades (if available) – academic record –
  • Proof of German language skills already acquired (certificate/proof of hours)
  • Certificate of the assessment test at a preparatory college (if available)
  • Curriculum vitae
  • Copy of the page of your passport containing your name and photograph
  • If required: Internship certificate, if applicable (please refer to the information on our degree programmes to find out whether an internship is required)
  • If required: Proof of professional experience, if applicable (please also refer to the information on our degree programmes to find out whether proof is required

You can find a detailed list here: https://www.uni-assist.de/en/how-to-apply/assemble-your-documents/

Copies of certified documents – whether electronic or paper – are only simple copies and are not certified themselves. A copy is only considered certified if it bears the original certification stamp.

The next steps after uni-assist has reviewed your application documents

Once uni-assist has verified that all the documents required for admission are complete, you will be notified.

  • If uni-assist has determined that you meet the formal admission requirements, the University of Emden/Leer will be informed accordingly and your documents will be forwarded to us.
  • However, in the case of restricted-admission degree programmes, it is still possible that you may not meet the admission criteria. You will have to wait and see whether you receive direct admission or rejection from us.
  • If your documents do not meet the formal requirements, uni-assist will also inform you accordingly.

If you are admitted by us but do not enrol, your documents will be kept at uni-assist for one year and then destroyed. Therefore, never submit original certificates.

If, based on the documents you have submitted, admission to the programme can only be granted upon successful completion of an assessment test at a preparatory college, you must take the assessment test.

Registration for the admission procedure at the Lower Saxony Studienkolleg in Hanover is done through the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer.

The deadline for registration at the Lower Saxony Studienkolleg varies each year. You can obtain more detailed information either from the Studienkolleg or from the colleagues at the Enrolment and Examination Office of our university.

You will then receive all further information from the Lower Saxony Studienkolleg.

NOTE: We recommend that you prove your academic eligibility for direct university admission by providing evidence of successful study periods (2–4 semesters) in your home country, as places at the Studienkolleg are limited.

Applicants from these countries must also submit the original certificate (India: the attestation) from the Academic Evaluation Centre of the relevant German Embassy (APS).

Without the APS certificate/attestation, your application cannot be processed.

You can apply for APS certificates here:

Information regarding visa

If you are a citizen of a country in the European Union (EU), the European Economic Area (EEA) or Switzerland, you do not need a visa to enter Germany.

If you are a citizen of a non-European country, you will need a visa (category D). Whether you need a visa for study purposes to enter Germany or whether you can obtain the required residence permit for study purposes after entering the country depends on which country you come from and how long you plan to stay in Germany.

You can find more information on visas at the International Office
