Founded in 1973 with the Faculties of Social Work and Business Studies, the Emden campus today combines the following areas: Social Work and Health, Technology and Business Studies – with over on 20 Bachelor and 10 Master study programs. The campus currently covers a total area of 90,000 square metres.
And we are still growing: for example, we are starting the 2019 summer semester with a completely new building: the modular house that offers even more space for events and offices. For you this means even more opportunities for project-based learning in small groups.

Hochschule beteiligt sich an Initiative zum fairen Handel
Am Dienstag (31.03.2026) haben sich zwölf Studierende und Lehrende der Hochschule Emden/Leer mit dem Fahrrad auf den Weg nach Amsterdam gemacht, um dort fair produzierte Schokolade abzuholen und wieder nach Ostfriesland zu bringen. Damit ist die Hochschule auch in diesem Jahr erneut und erstmals mit einem großen Team bei der bundesweiten Initiative „Schokofahrt“ dabei.
Rund 290 Kilometer umfasst die Strecke zur Produktionsstätte der Chocolatemakers, dem Hersteller der Schokolade, am Hafen in Amsterdam. Der Kakao für die Tafeln der wird in der Dominikanischen Republik von einer Kooperative unter biologischen Bedingungen angebaut und fair gehandelt. Nach Amsterdam wird die wertvolle Fracht mit dem Frachtsegler „Tres Hombres“ klimaneutral über den Atlantik nach Europa gesegelt. Auch die Löschung der Ladung vom Schiff sowie der Transport zur Fabrik erfolgt komplett ohne motorisierte Hilfsmittel.
Die Idee zur Schokofahrt entstand in Münster im Frühjahr 2017. Die vier fahrradbegeisterten Initiatoren interessierten sich für die Bedingungen, unter denen Kakao angebaut, transportiert und gehandelt wird. Mit der Schokofahrt soll somit auf nachhaltigen Konsum zugunsten des Klimaschutzes aufmerksam gemacht werden.
Damit die Schokolade auch die letzten Kilometer bis zum Kunden emissionsfrei zurücklegen kann, machen sich zweimal im Jahr hunderte Menschen mit dem Fahrrad auf den Weg nach Amsterdam, um dort die Schokolade abzuholen und sie in die Geschäfte zu bringen: nach Oldenburg, Berlin oder München, sogar in die Schweiz und nach Österreich.
Die Emder Schokofahrt-Crew wird mit ihrer süßen Fracht am Ostersamstag wieder in Emden ankommen.
