International Finance and Controlling

The focus subject “Finance Management and Controlling” covers two sub sections which essentially deal with the financial management of businesses:

In the Finance Management sector, on one hand, the financial management of businesses is examined extensively. You should learn the ideal way to look after the financial means of a business. This covers getting to know and assessing current financial tools and other measures of capital acquisition, capital structuring and the contractual design of financial relationships for payment, information, monitoring and security rights between businesses and their investors. Current financing opportunities on financial markets will also be examined. On the other hand, you shall learn the management of credit institutes in the bank management sector. This presents how modern banks work in the business areas of lending businesses and securities businesses. Special areas are the financial structuring of project financing as well as the management of banks and savings banks in risk controlling.

Possible areas of application for graduates are finance departments of businesses and any activity or area in banks or savings banks.
As well as both focus subject areas, Bank and Finance Management, there is also a specialisation in the research areas Restructuring and Insolvency. Here, among other things, the FCHCert is awarded for banking industry practicians.

In the Controlling sector, it is a question of supporting management with controlling processes, in particular planning, control, analysis and reporting, to manage the business in a target-oriented manner. Here, on one hand, transparency should be created, for example, it should be made clear how much money the business is making with certain products or certain customers. On the other hand, the departments of the company should be coordinated with each other, for example, it should be ensured that development, production and sales have the same expectations for the future revenue development of the company. In addition, the use of a controlling department should make it clear whether a business is achieving its own goals or whether it will have problems in the future, and if it will, where these problems will be.

The entry into professional life can occur via working in planning and managing departments, such as controlling, business management, business development or similar. Areas of application, however, can also be in cost accounting or assisting the board, the managing directors or the head of sales.

During your studies, you can concentrate on one of both sub sections of the focus subject by attending lectures primarily in Finance Management or Controlling. However, at least one module from each of these subject areas must be obtained.

Combination with other Focus Subjects

The focus subject Finance Management can easily be combined with all other focus subjects. In Credit Analysis, knowledge of accounting in particular can be helpful. When working in an investor relations department, skills from the focus subject Marketing are also necessary. In banks and savings banks, sales is often very important, so the focus subject Bank Management can be combined well with the area of Marketing & Sales. If you are aiming for business or departmental management positions, board assistance or branch management of a bank, the subjects Business Management and Personnel are ideal to supplement your timetable. On the other hand, the management area can help you with the conception of optimal financial investments in terms of structuring project financing transactions.

Controlling can be applied to all business areas. For a controlling department which deals with the financial management of the business, knowledge of accounting is helpful from a technical point of view. However, Controlling is also the ideal completion to the subject Business Management, because it usually works very close to top management. However, there are also increasingly more specialised controllers, e.g. marketing controllers, logistics controllers or IT controllers. In this respect, controlling can also be combined well with these focus subjects. In addition, controlling also demands a high level of business understanding, including knowledge in the fundamental operational functions such as acquisitions. Production and Sales/Marketing are helpful.
