With its varied and up to date programme, Hochschule Emden/Leer positions itself primarily as a university of applied science in the region and for the region.
Bachelor’s and master’s degrees in engineering and natural sciences, nautical science, business administration, social work and health science aim to cover current and future needs for academics in the region.
Excellent teaching and study programmes with an international profile are seen here as essential elements in the education of young scientists for a globalised knowledge-based society.
Research, technology transfer and continuing education – particularly in our established areas of specialisation – serve among other aspects to provide stimuli for new businesses or new directions in existing business and society.
This focus of the university – a strong commitment to the region and at the same time an international orientation – matches the picture shown in an OECD study from 2007.
The profile of Hochschule Emden/Leer stems from the combination developed over recent years of areas of specialisation in teaching, research and technology transfer. Regional relevance, an international focus, study programmes with interdisciplinary features, and aspects of sustainability all contribute to a high degree in defining its profile.
The regional relevance of the university of applied science with its two campuses in East Frisia is focussed on
1. the growth region Ems-Axis
2. the cross-border Ems-Dollart-Region (EDR)
Here, Hochschule Emden/Leer is the only university of applied science in the growth region Ems-Axis with a comprehensive and broad range of studies!
Cooperation with universities on the Dutch side of the EDR both in teaching and in research and knowledge transfer is of particular importance. The participating universities can point to a whole series of successful cooperation agreements. Joint study programmes (e.g. double degrees, joint degrees) and transfer projects open up many perspectives for regional development; this process is to be extended.
At the Leer campus’ Department of Maritime Studies, the university‘s maritime specialisation is particularly emphasised in its regional context.
Existing cooperation agreements with Universität Oldenburg (joint bachelor‘s and master‘s degree programmes, joint research projects) and Jade-Hochschule are to be continued and intensified. The cooperation with the Lingen campus of Hochschule Osnabrück is to be developed further.
Close cooperation with Universität Vechta (joint doctoral programme) also reflects the relevance for the region.
