TriPod W3

TriPod W3 is a research project funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology. The development work is carried out at the Hochschule Emden / Leer in cooperation with company Wissner GmbH located in Göttingen.
The project started in August 2010 and will last for 3 years. Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Elmar Wings takes the role of the supervisor for all work packages carried out at Hochschule Emden / Leer.

The aim of the project is to develop a machine tool with parallel kinematic. Using this kind of kinematic the movement of the tool center point is based on the synchronous control of axis drives integrated directly into the machine`s structure.
This approach offers some advantages over conventional machine tools based on serial kinematics. The main aspects are higher accerlaration, verlocity, and precision with equal or less energy consumption.
As a prototyp application the machine will be used to mill molds (stainless steel) used for the production of tooth prostheses.

The following illustration shows the main aspects that distinguish the TriPod`s kinematic concept from conventional machine tools using a serial kinematic:

Serial kinematic:

Serial kinematic:

  • Serial kinematic chains
  • Velocity and precision limited by machine structure layout

Parallel kinematic:

  • Drives integrated in the structure of the machine
  • Movement of the tool center point by controling the drives synchronously
  • Velocity and precision limited by control system, instead of the machine`s structural layout

Challenges:

  • Development of the kinematic model
  • Simulation of the Tripod kinematic
  • Programming a control system for parallel kinematics

Coorperation with students:
We are constantly looking for students who would like to take part in the development of the Tripod. Due to the fact that the project combines technologies from different fields, like electrical engineering, machanical engineering, computer science, etc., students of allmost all disciplines and skill level can participate. For further information feel free to visit the project staff in the MSR lab (room T49) or send an e-mail to Coorperation with students:
Prof. Dr. rer.nat. Elmar Wings or M.Sc. Björn Lünemann. It is possible to start a project thesis as well as a masterthesis within the project.
