Meet our Students

Marisa Filipa Ramos Azinheiro, Portugal, Austauschstudentin

Home country and home university

Portugal, Universidade Nova de Lisboa

Why did you choose the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer for your study period in Germany? What do/did you study here?

Studying abroad has always been a goal for me, because it is something that makes you get out of your comfort zone. I study Industrial Engineering and Management in Portugal, and one of the main reasons for choosing this university was because it allowed me to have classes of International Business (all lectured in English, which was great). I also wanted to learn the German language: mission accomplished!

What do you especially like at the University of Applied Sciences Emden/Leer?

For me the quality of the teachers was very important. They are always available for possible doubts you may have and they talked perfect English. The infra-structures are cozy, warm and well-equipped with computers and software. The Mensa  offers you good meals for cheap prices: great!

What inspires you in Germany (e.g. culture, art, music, food)?

What I liked the most about Germany was the Christmas market. I have no other word to describe it apart from magical! It does not matter if you go to one in Emden, Bremen or Oldenburg, you will love the Christmas spirit that everyone has. I spent the Christmas holidays in Germany and I was speechless with the effort Germans put in Christmas decorations, songs, and so on. It was also great to see snowing so much. I could even build a snowman!

Did you visit any cities and highlights in Germany? Which ones?

As an exchange student, of course I did! I travelled not only during the weekends, but also in Christmas holidays. Some of the beautiful cities I visited were: Berlin, Cologne (my favorite), Frankfurt, Amsterdam, Groningen, Hamburg, Bremen, Oldenburg, Hannover, Leer and Norddeich.

Where would you see your near professional career? In Germany or in a different country?

Before Erasmus I wanted to work abroad already. After Erasmus this desire is even bigger. I love to travel and to know different cultures. Right now, I am looking for what I am passionate about. It does not need to be necessarily in Germany, it can be in any place outside Portugal. Actually, Spain would be a country that I would like to go in the nearest future.

Any final words for your readers?

I dare you going out of your comfort zone. Just go for it! Travel, experience, learn. One day you will look back and remember this was the best time of your life.
